What To Watch: 20 Shows That Exude Black Excellence (UPDATED)

I love being entertained by shows and programming that exude images of black excellence, luxury, and hypergamy. That’s the kind of energy that I want in my life, around my life and the kind of lifestyle I want my children to live.

Raising children of the next generation, I understand and see how impressionable children are, they all want to be like their favorite characters from their favorite TV shows, I would know… my daughter is “Tori” from Victorious every single day 🙄.

I think that over the last decade or so, somehow we’ve normalized the idea of “the struggle” and excessive violence with shows like BMF, Snowfall, Power, The Chi, The Wire, Love & Hip Hop, Bad Girls Club, etc. Now don’t get me wrong, some of these are great shows and were very much my favorite at one point in time. I also understand that some of the lifestyles predicted in these shows are very much parallel to the lifestyles that real people live, but why keep drilling those stereotypes of negativity into our subconscious?

Although my children are still very young and nowhere near of age to watch any of the shows mentioned above, I know that one day they will be watching old enough, and by that time I hope to see more positive leading images of BIPOC in entertainment.

In this list, I am sharing MY top shows to watch that I believe showcase the more positive and affluent images that BIPOC deserve to see themselves in.

23. BEL-AIR

This show is a modern-day reboot of the classic 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” that ran for 6 seasons. This reboot is very different from the original version in that instead of a comedy, it’s definitely giving drama and black excellence. This cast does a wonderful job bringing a nostalgic storyline back to life in this 2022 remake. New episodes of Bel- Air drop each Thursday on the Peacock TV app (available on the app store).

That’s all the shows that I could think of to include in this post. Comment below if you have any #BlackGirlLuxury shows that you’d add to this list. Subscribe to my channel, newsletter, and bookmark this link because I’ll be updating this post as new shows that fit this aesthetic are released!
